Birds Conservation
Sustrust is proud to support bird conservation efforts in Crenver Grove through our nest record project in partnership with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).
The BTO’s Nest Record Scheme gathers vital data on the breeding success of British birds, tracking the progress of individual nests throughout the season.
Our Nest Box Monitoring
In February 2024, we installed 30 nest boxes in Crenver Grove to monitor local bird populations. During the nesting season, April to mid-July, each box is checked weekly following the nesting code of conduct, ensuring minimal disturbance to the birds.
Weekly data is submitted to the BTO, helping build a broader picture of bird behaviour across the UK.
Exciting First-Year Results
The first year of monitoring has been hugely successful, with 25 out of 30 nest boxes used, resulting in 60 successfully fledged chicks, primarily blue tits and great tits.
Unfortunately, a few chicks were lost due to desertion during a wet period, which is a natural nesting behaviour, but overall, the season was highly rewarding.
Looking Ahead
For 2025, five additional nest boxes will be installed, expanding our monitoring efforts.
If you spot someone checking the boxes, come say hello and learn more about this fascinating project.
